Becoming a Director for Community Futures Nicola Valley:

Qualifications of Board Members 

  • Commitment to the mission of the organization
  • Respectfulness and the ability to work with others
  • Time to serve on the Board and Committees
  • Specific expertise relating to the organization's mandate
  • Knowledge of the community and the people served
  • Ability to express a community point of view to the Board
  • Ability to advocate and represent the organization to the community

Time Commitment Required

  • One year term with opportunity for ongoing renewal, a two year commitment is preferred
  • Willingness to serve on at least one Board committee and participate in committee meetings
  • Attend the Annual General Meeting and any specific general meeting of the members
  • Attend at least 90% of the regularly scheduled Board meeting and the annual planning meetings
  • If more than three consecutive meetings are missed by a Board member, a discussion will be initiated by the Board Chair regarding the ongoing interest and ability to continue as a Board member.

Applicants will be processed as follows

  1. The applicant is required to submit a personal resume and an application that is circulated to all Board of Directors.
  2. The Board reviews the application and decides whether or not to offer membership at the next scheduled Board meeting.
  3. The accepted applicant will be invited to meet with the General Manager and be given an orientation. 
  4. The General Manager will invite the applicant to attend the next scheduled Board meeting where the applicant will be given an oath and then be appointed to the Community Futures Development Corporation Nicola Valley's Board.

  

Board Member Job Description

Each Board member is fully responsible for the activities of the organization. Board members foster open and respectful discussion of all issues before the Board and seek the broadest possible support on all decisions. Once the Board makes a decision, all members of the Board support the decision and speak with one voice to the staff and the community. The Board seeks to have a broad and inclusive reflection of the community at the Board level.

Specific duties of each Board Member

  • Review materials and meet for orientation when first elected to the board
  • Participate regularly at board meetings and advise the chair when unable to attend
  • Participate on at least one board committee if needed
  • Actively help the board reach group decisions
  • Listen to and evaluate other opinions with an open mind
  • Become familiar with the organization's bylaws, policies, vision, mission and end results
  • Read board reports and become aware of the organization's activities
  • Monitor board level financial reports
  • Evaluate the performance of the Board
  • Become aware of changing needs in the community
  • Be committed to fair, open and transparent processes
